Turning the Mustangs' baseball team into one of the state's best over the past 17 seasons Reed Peters will now be turning right onto Pershing Avenue instead of turning left as he was recently named the new Head Coach for the baseball team at the University of the Pacific.
"I've loved it here at Delta and truly no reason to leave other than a new challenge," said Peters. "I came here, and Delta was on the bottom and was able to resurrect the program. It's going to be a very big move (going to Pacific), but I have been here 17 years and I'm ready for a new challenge."
Over his 17 seasons as the Head Coach for the Mustangs', they went to 12 of the last 14 Elite Eights and eight Final Fours while finishing as runners-up four times and winning a state championship twice.
"We are incredibly grateful for Coach Peters' dedication and contributions to our baseball program," said Delta College Athletic Director Tony Espinoza. "His leadership and commitment over the years have not only shaped the program but also inspired our student-athletes to strive for excellence on and off the field. We wish him all the best in his new role at UOP and look forward to following his continued success."
"It was very tough," said Peters on his decision to leave Delta. "I went back and forth and at this point in my career, it was either now or never, and I want to do it while I still have the energy to do it, do it right, and give it all I got."
"I was content staying here (Delta) until I retired. I had coached Division I before at the Air Force Academy. At that time, it was very tough on my family with three young kids. Now that they are grown, and I have more time I think this is going to be a great deal."
"It has rejuvenated me, and I can feel my energy go up already. It's going to be a huge challenge. The new AD and the new president are both class acts and great people that I'd love to work for. I think they have it headed in the right direction, and they are committed to winning now and are motivated to do that. It always helps if you have support and that's what we had here at Delta was tremendous support behind the program and I feel like UOP is headed in the same direction as far as support."
Peters takes over a Pacific baseball program that has not had a winning season since 2010. During his 17 seasons with the Mustangs, he went 386-167.
"Just changing the culture within for one," said Peters about some of the things he will be looking to do at his new school. "These guys aren't used to winning. We have to sell the program, sell myself and our staff. The school has a lot going for itself with its education and the facilities are top-of-the-line. It's going to be a matter of hard work."
The Mustangs are coming off of a 2024 season that saw them go 36-15 and finish as state runners-up. Bob Kittle has been named as the Interim Head Coach for the fall semester. Coach Kittle is a current baseball adjunct instructor at Delta College. The search for a new permanent head coach will begin this fall. Details regarding the position will be available through human resources at the start of the new school year.
